Submission to the Senate Standing Committee on Legal and Constitutional Affairs
CHP and the Homeless Persons Legal Clinic (PILCH) have made a submission to the Senate Standing Committee on Legal and Constitutional Affairs. The Committee is inquiring into the Scrutiny of Human Rights Bill, currently before the Australian Parliament. This Bill came about following the national consultation into whether Australia should have a federal Human Rights Act. Despite the consultation committee and over 80% of consultees calling for such a law, the Australian Government has decided against it. Instead they have introduced this Bill which, if it becomes law, will allow the Parliament to scrutinize all legislation for human rights compliance. Although this is welcome, it falls far short of comprehensive legal protection of human rights, including the right to a home.

17-03-10 Submission to the Scrutiny of Acts and Regulations Committee Equal Opportunity Bill 2010
CHP has made a submission to the Scrutiny of Acts and Regulations Committee regarding the omission of homelessness from the Equal Opportunity Act. Our submission argues that this omission will "continue to trespass unduly upon the rights of people experiencing homelessness... The cost of not addressing discrimination on the ground of homelessness for society, from both an economic and a human rights perspective, as well as for the individuals themselves, is more than can be afforded. There are 23,000 homeless Victorians. We believe they deserve equal treatment before the law".
